A PRESENTATION, TALK and Q&AOCTOBER 19 at 2 pm

Dear Friends,Please join us this Sunday October 19 the Museum of Art & History MoAH in Lancaster for a presentation by artist Guillermo Bert about his ongoing collaboration with indigenous weavers from Oxaca and Chile and his current exhibition Encoded Textiles.Encoded Textiles is a series of large scale hand-woven tapestries that combine electronic scanning codes with indigenous design methods and the first-person voices of native peoples. The textiles, made by traditional Mapuche and Zapotec weavers, represent the artist’s effort to keep the ancient weaving traditions alive in a globalized community.Bert will share hand dyed yarns and looms with the public during his talk. Come learn about the cultural and artistic traditions that inspire his life’s work. The talk begins at 2 p.m. and the public is welcome to come early to view the exhibition before the presentation.  A lively question and answer session and reception will follow the presentation.

ABOUT THE EXHIBTION AT MOAHThis event coincide with six new exhibits at MOAH, with the headlining show Encoded Textilesby renowned Los Angeles-based artist Guillermo Bert. Bert explores issues of indigenous culture and identity in the 21st century. Encoded Textiles engages a new generation of bar code technology and indigenous symbols through large textiles made by traditional Mapuche, Acomaand Zapotec weavers.The project is interactive: viewers are invited to scan Encoded Textiles with their smart phones to reveal transcribed stories, poems and narratives of the indigenous people of Chile, Oaxaca(México) and the Southwest United States. Short documentary films will accompany the textiles, making the stories behind the work accessible to all.Through the weavings together with slick laser cut cube sculptures, podcasts and film clips, the artist offers his commentary on the issues of identity and cultural loss in our global society.

About the Author

Guillermo Bert was born in Santiago, Chile in 1959. He holds an advanced Bachelor degree in Fine Arts from the Catholic University of Santiago. Guillermo’s work has been exhibited at and collected by numerous museums in the U.S. and South America. He has won multiple prizes, government grants and commissions as well as created a number of public art projects such as permanent murals and installations. His paintings and drawings have been featured on TV programs and movies nationally andinternationally as well as reviewed in major newspapers in the U.S., Japan and Chile. He has worked as Art Director for the Los Angeles Times. Guillermo Bert (Santiago, Chile, 1959). Realizó estudios avanzados de licenciatura en artes de la Universidad Católica de Santiago. Sus trabajos artísticos han sido exhibidos y recopilados por numerosos museos de Estados Unidos y Sudamérica. Asimismo, ha obtenido diversos premios, subvenciones de gobiernos y encargos de trabajos artísticos, y realizado varios proyectos, tales como murales permanentes e instalaciones de arte. Pinturas y dibujos suyos han aparecido en programas de televisión y películas de Chile y del extranjero. Su obra ha sido estudiada por diferentes publicaciones especializadas de Estados Unidos, Japón y Chile. Bert ha trabajado como director artístico de Los Angeles Times.
